Progressing from "Sigma-lite" to full Sigma
#1
Hello

I'm currently enjoying a "sigma-lite" lifestyle i.e. [email protected]#ked off the 9-5, lots more travelling and meeting new people, free time to hit the gym, starting new hobbies etc.

My aim is to live a full Sigma or Perpetual Traveller lifestyle where I'm not tied to any location and I receive a true passive income that requires no further maintenance or work on my part.

I'd be really interested to get feedback from people who have made this step from Sigma-lite to full Sigma or Perpetual Traveller.  Please note I'm not expecting anyone to wave a magic wand and give me business ideas that I can use but I am interested in the actual process of going from Sigma lite to full Sigma.  Are there any common pitfalls to avoid, any lessons learnt that could be shared...?

Look forward to hearing from you

Yo!
Firstly congrats - you posted the first ever post on the new forum!!  Tongue Tongue Tongue Smile Smile Smile

I feel a video series coming on...Right after I've fleshed out this forum. And built the 6 month membership site. And....you get the point.

One thing I will say re building a passive income that requires no "further maintenance or work" on your part. I am NOT the worlds expert....But in my view, it doesn't exist. There is a metric FUCK TONNE of work involved.  At least if you do it online.

Welcome!

Hello again.

So I've just done a new video about this forum.  Although it's not 100% on topic, I do talk about some aspects of building an online community, why you want your own platforms, the setup, business ethos etc.  It at least tangentially touches on your question so you (and others) may find it useful!

I did the solo online business for about 4 years and sold it (not for much). It was a very tough experience to manage to live from it properly
Like Steve said it needs tons of work and it was in my experience very stressful.
I'm now doing a startup for which I raised a fair amount of money, I'm not sure how much that fits in a sigma mindset since I kinda "created" my own hierarchy.
This also means I have to answer to my investors which means I sold part of my freedom as well.
I could talk about it in the Swap skill part of the forum if people are interested

I am VERY much interested! Sounds fascinating and I'd love to hear about it. This is exactly part of the reason for the forum.

May I make a suggestion though? If you're going to write about what you've done, it's probably better under the lifestyle forum because it's bis / finances related. Unless you're just looking to skill swap with someone without talking about it on the forum.

Welcome!

Your definition of a true passive income is basically a fantasy. I own a small business that’s growing and am also involved in short term real estate investments. The problem is that it takes lots of energy, focus and acceptance of risk that most people just can’t muster. The good is that it gives you the ability to step away for travel on your terms. I don’t have to ask for permission from a fucking boss for a vacation. I am the boss. I also make enough money to go to nice places and do cool things when I get there. Having a small business means having some infrastructure so it’s a bit alpha but so what. If you want extreme wealth you have to have a crazy high value skill or you have to build something that gives you leverage. Leverage on properties, commodities, copyrights, people etc. Anything big enough to give you a decent lifestyle so that you don’t have to work very hard is going to be a lot of work to get. “Today I will do what others won’t, so tomorrow I can accomplish what others can’t” Jerry Rice.

In the last 18 months I built a modest but worthwhile passive income on top of my online business. The only glitch right now is that the passive income is not 100% reliable if I leave Asia for too long.

There are always weak spots in businesses and although they can be minimised, I've found that it's often better to set up entirely separate or complimentary hustles to buffer the unforeseen failure of one business.

It can happen. I remember telling this idea to a long-term employee of a place I would visit for business. He seemed convinced by its merits, but he also looked comfy in his position.
The last I recall was seeing a news story about how the area had flooded under extreme weather, submerging the office in 1.5metres of water. After that the boss decided it was time to shut shop forever. I wonder what happened to that guy?
